Labels or Love , an age old question?

Labels or Love , an age old question?

By

Reginald Larkin

“Already know what my addiction is ,I be looking for labels. I ain’t looking for love I shop for purses while I walks out the door Don’t cry. buy a bag and get over it And.. I’m not concerned with all the politics It’s a lot of men I know I could find another,” These are the lyrics to Fergie’s , Salaam Remm produced anthem” Labels or Love.” While I find the lyrics rather amusing I must admit that I have never truly been a cynic about love, well except that one awkward black period but I digress.

What I am coming to terms with is like many of my fellow Americans I have become a victim of “Retail Therapy.” For those of you who are not in the know or are not advent “GirlFriends” fan, you may not understand the term “Retail Therapy.” But that is okay that is why I am here, the term “Retail Therapy” simply describes a kind of coping mechanism where one shops for material things to compensate for emotional distress. “Retail Therapy” has always helped me in my time of need after a bad date or tragic birthday. But I don’t write this article to describe my personal horror stories.

I write this article to question whether or not, we’re nation of people who cannot stand on our own? The constant consumption of goods as a means of finding fulfillment can not be healthy, can it? Aunt Rosa once said “you can buy out the mall ,go in debt , what the heck you cant take with you anyways!” While this carefree sentiment should not be taken too literal it does have a valid point. Buying material things to compensate for a lack of genuine relationships stunts ones development as a person. I’m sure we have all just met those “label whores” who lack substance yet have all the latest threads.

Those types of emotionally bankrupt people have failed to form healthy bonds with others. Andrea foot, a wise family friend calls this “Arrested Development,” meaning people who never hit their milestones in life (i.e having a childhood, attending prom etc.) fail to develop into mentally stable adults ,in turn they maintain the mindset of that age where they are stunted for an extended period of time. On a side note I know it sounds like I’m giving a heavy vocabulary lesson but it is integral to the point I am trying to share.

So many people are convinced that they must have the love of others or materials appreciate their own self worth. Filling one’s life full of minutiae will only delay the evadible. There is no crime in loving one self and placing your self first. Realizing that you are a prize is not a bad thing it does not make you “conceited” or “self-centered.” Upholding standreds and sticking to them is probably the thing that will make you that girl/guy who has that extra “vava voom.” Standing your ground and holding to your standards says that you know what makes you happy and you won’t settle for less.

Here is an example; I have a friend who sleeps with men as soon as she meets them with the hopes that she will obtain a boyfriend. What she fails to realize is that sleeping with a man as soon as she meets them sends the message “this is all I have to offer.” There was no trial period he got to take the car off the lot and didn’t even have to pay. Self confidence and love are the best accessories anyone can ever have. After all, someone with “healthy” self – esteem will standout against a crowd of people.

Labels are nice and I love them too, however I also understand that true self - love and confidence are priceless. When you love yourself, there is very little that can be done to make u feel down about yourself. I felt the need to explain that while you may have the vastest wardrobe or most sublime dress, in contrast your greatest accessory can not be bought in stores. The journey to find love is a long and lonely one, but forgetting to bring your friends Self – Esteem and Confidence will make that journey most dreadful.

Monster Jelly Fish?!

By: Reginald Larkin
Jellyfish are a common sight in the sea and with their growing populations. It appears that there is now a variety in their size as well. Jellyfish with a length five feet are swimming off the coast of southeast Asia, North sea, Black sea, and the Gulf of Mexico. Researchers are saying that fish keep the jellyfish populations stable however, with overfishing there is no one to compete for their food source. Climate change may be instrumental in creating ideal conditions for jellyfish to grow. While some may hear of these “monster jelly fish” and think that, this is just evolution in turn ignoring the fact that if one population grows others must shrink. Jellyfish are not only growing in number but in size meaning they will begin to hunt for more suitable prey. Researchers are speculating that there is a Jellyfish that weighs 440lbs with a diameter of 2.5 ft. Over time these jellyfish will only get bigger inversely forcing many of our favorite sea creatures to become lunch or go extinct. For more information about “monster jelly fish” you can search the original article at http://current.com/items/90174935_monster-jellyfish.htm

Check It Out: Video Review Of Kid Cudi- "Make Her Say"

By: Alex Langston
Here at A.I.R we heart Kid Cudi, so we are bringing his latest video "Make Her Say" off his debut album Man On the Moon which is set to release August 25th. The video premired on MTV Hits today, and though it strays away from his first video "Day N Nite", it stays close to the abstract style that Cudi seems to bleed. The song seems to sample Lady Gaga's "Poker Face", but if you listen closely to the hook it says "I po-po-po-po poke her face" not "poker-face"; the video also features and cameos from Kanye West and Common all representing the G.O.O.D Music label! There are no bad reviews on our account, so without further ado, Kid Cudi ft. Kanye West and Common with "Make Her Say", check it out!

It is rumored that the father is Jussie Smollet the brother of Jurnee Smollet (our girl from Eve’s Bayou). Stay in your lane : Jay-z

Selling over 26 million records and winning 8 Grammys Shawn Carter, Jay-Z has managed to change the face of Hip-Hop. The industry practically looked to him after the deaths of both Biggie and Pac. Writing this segment is really going to hurt my soul but right is right and wrong is wrong. This really hurts my soul but it needs to be said “JAY-Z STAY IN YOUR LANE!” recently Jay-Z has been all over the place and in a bad way. Banning poor Chris Brown(new age Ike Turner) from Bet Awards. Yes , Chris Brown brutally beat Rihanna however, he has managed to plead guilty and agree to attend court mandated counseling. Outside of the ChrihannaGate drama, Jay-Z has managed to release Three albums after his "retirement" that have yet to capture the essence of his earlier work. Dont get it twisted becuz i am a HUGE Jay-Z however , there have been some missteps in the this walk we call life. Remeber people when someone is merging into someone elses lane remember A.I.R's staff will be there will be there to remind them to stay in their lane.

Breath of Fresh AIR : The Saturdays

By Reggie Larkin

I have never been nuts about girl groups, however Euro pop group The Saturdays are a phenomenon. ,Rochelle,Vanessa,Mollie,Frankie, and Una (same order as the picture) have managed to take Europe by storm. These beautiful women have managed to infuse pop beats with catchy lyrics. often time i throw pop music away after a month or two but it is going on month three and i am in love. Watch out for these girls while still a fresh group and more grooming is needed, they have undeniable star quality. Given time these girls are going to take over the world .

Remembering a Legend : Micheal Jackson

By Jordan Clark
I feel honored to say I got a chance to see him. 2001 in D.C. at the United We Stand Concert. There were many other stars there that night, Aerosmith, Diddy, ‘Nsync, and James Brown, but everyone was there to see one man. That man of course was one Michael Jackson. It was amazing, almost surreal to think that I saw him live. He wasn’t quite 80’s Michael but he was still damn good and that was good enough for me and everyone else there. The one thing I remember most is the phrase he repeated over and over, “I love you.” He must have said it a hundred times and I’m sure he meant it each and every time.

No one was prepared for what happened last week with his unfortunate passing of Michael and the world is still reeling from it. He was only a few weeks from performing a huge show in London, his first in many years. He was going to do 50 shows in as many nights, which might have jump started another run for the king of pop. Sadly he didn’t make it that far but instead of grieving lets look back and celebrate his life.

I remember the first time I saw the Thriller video (and not just the video, the whole extended making of video with the credits at the end). It was incredible; it’s like everything before and after has paled in comparison to that masterpiece. And the videos kept on coming, from Remember the Time, to Black or White, to Smooth Criminal. Then there was just the music period. Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad, Dangerous, and all the Jackson 5 stuff are filled with timeless songs that people have been singing ever since. And who didn’t want to dance like Mike, from the moonwalk, to the spins, he redefined what it was to dance period. Every entertainer since he stepped on the scene has been trying to catch up to the incredible standards he has set. To my generation Michael, was magic, he didn’t seem real, we never thought he’d leave us. He inspired us to dance, to sing, to dream and use our imagination's to the fullest extent.

It’s hard to believe that he’s no longer with us. I always imagined I’d be watching the Grammys with my kids and they’d ask, “whose that guy daddy”, and I’d say that’s Michael Jackson, the greatest entertainer ever. It seems like he’s been with us forever, my parents grew up with Mike, my sister grew up with Mike, and I grew up with Mike, but knowing we were the last ones to do so is truly sad. To the King of Pop rest in peace, and to the world keep rocking to the music, it’s what he’d want us to do.

Shopper's Delight: TOPMAN

Air's own Fashionista Rah Brown wants to share his one of his new favorite stores wit you all. i hope you enjoy and look out for more from this Fashionista on the rise.
An Extension from Europe
By Rah Brown
website:www.topman.com

Topman is a male extension from the hugely successful female store Topshop. Topman provides high end men’s clothing for a resemble price. Some might even argue that it is the new Urban Outfitters. The fact that Topman originated in the United Kingdom is a good enough reason for me shop there in the first place. In addition to its foreign touch, Topshop offers everything from professional sreet wear to street wear. With only one real main store in the United States there’s is always a wait to get in. When I went to Soho, New York to visit Topman for the first time there was a line outside the store to get in. (That’s how serious it is.)
Topman’s styling influence ranges from just about every genre. When you walk in the store you might see indie-rock in the front and in the back an upper eastside style. You won’t at all find everyday designers in Topman. There are always up-and-coming designers to when you visit. Kim Jones, Markus Lupfer and Peter Jensen are some of the many designers that have made Topman their home.
Topman has earned “Best Fashion Retailer” at the Maximum Style Awards and “Best High Street Retailer” Retailer’ at the 2007 FHM Fashion and Grooming awards.

Breath of Fresh AIR : Solange

While Solange's Album has been out for quite some time i thought i should still drop and ol reveiw for this musical powerhouse!

By Reggie Larkin

After five years of silence, Solange Knowles is back and this time she is taking no prisoners with her sophomore effort SoL-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams. This go round Mrs. Knowles manifested her destiny by creating an album that is a true reflection of who she is as an artist. Solange has managed to avoid many of the pitfalls of her first album SoloStar , by taking creative control of her career. At first listen to the single’s “I decided” and “Sandcastle Disco”, the audience get’s the impression that this album is paying homage to the greats of Motown. Although, that is what the singles may say to the public ,the album’s standout tracks scream of an artist who has found her voice and is unafraid to utilize it. Songs such as T.O.N.Y , This Bird, and Would’ve been the one truly showcase Knowles voice and lyrical content . T.O.N.Y is a song about a guy who solange met and just can’t seem to shake. The songs infectious chant “I would have been in love by now if it wasn’t for T.O.N.Y , T.O.N.Y” ring in the listeners head well after the song has ended .and if the fact that the song was catchy wasn’t enough , Solange uses T.O.N.Y to invoke the spirit of Martha and the vandellas at their prime in 1965. Solange’s agile soprano is something to be in awe of. In an age, where many artist are restricted to a three note range, it is refreshing to see a pop singer who can sing, and not yell.

Breath of Fresh AIR: Pay “Attention” to Wale

By: Alex Langston
DMV not only stands for Department of Motor Vehicles but also the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area, in which new artist Wale hails from.
Wale, and that’s pronounced Wah-Lay not “Whale”, is not totally a new artist, though underground at the time, he toured with super-producer and DJ Mark Ronson two years ago in May 2007 shortly after being signed to his label Allido Records. It wasn’t until 2008 that this 24 year-old would be headed into a mainstream direction.
With his clever wordplay and the raw imagery of D.C. captured by Baltimorean video director Chris Robinson, MTV JAMS picked up Wale’s first video as “Jam of the Week” in December 2008. In early 2009, his single “Nike Boots”, which was more about the unification of brotherhood in dressing alike than the actual boots themselves. The single became more than hit, it was an anthem.
The DMV rapper released his second single and followed it with the video. This time he had some extra help from producers Cool and Dre, and another newcomer, Lady GaGa. He penned the raps and she sung catchy a hook-- “Lookin’ at, lookin’ at, lookin’ at me, look at that, look at how they lookin’ at me, eyes all sticking like honey on bees, look at that look at how they lookin’ at me”-- that taunts all others who may try to compete with the duo. Wale once again, teamed up with director Chris Robinson to shoot his next video for his most recent single “Chillin”, which uses a sample from Steam’s 1969 hit “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye”. The video aired on MTV JAMS June 8, 2009 as “Jam of the Week” which makes this his second music video to have the pleasure of being aired for a week, once every hour on the station.
It may have seemed like forever but here it is three years since Wale started taking his first steps to become hip-hop’s savior of rap music, and he’s not showing any signs slowing down. In fact, he’s released five mixtapes, has been featured in countless articles in The Rolling Stones, XXL, FADER, and UBR magazines and the front page of The Washington Post, and as of May 2009 made his first television performance on “Last Call With Carson Daly” late night talk show, all while recording his debut album set to release later this year titled, Attention Deficit.
There’s so much more to expect from Wale. He’s already crushing his competition, newcomers and veterans alike. He’s lyrically talented, has style that puts him with the dope boys on the corner to Hollywood’s elite socialites, and hey, he’s not too bad on the eyes either. Give him another three years and he’ll have more than just our attention but for right now he’s breath fresh AIR.
Check out Wale's latest video "Chillin" featuring Lady GaGa.

New Music Round Up

By: Jordan Clark

So with this summer rolling along everyone’s looking for some good music to keep the good times rolling, and while bumping the classics is always a good look, sometimes it’s time to try something new. With that said let me present you with some new artists’ guaranteed to get you rocking even when the temperature is in the 90’s.

Sam Sparro

Sam Sparro: Even though he’s not the well known over here in the states, Mr. Sparro is a huge sensation over in the U.K. His self titled debut album is full of music that will keep you dancing all night long. From songs like Black and Gold to 21st Century Life Sparros brand of dirty electro pop will bring the funk to your summer that you desperately need.

The Noisettes

The Noisettes: If you love some good old fashion rock and roll mixed with a little dance flavor, with a dash of Lauryen Hill, and there you have it, The Noisettes. With their second album entitled Wild Young Hearts in stores now, this U.K. trio have tweaked their sound a bit and made the kind of album that plays like a sound track to your summer.

KiD CuDi

KiD CuDi: Mr. Solo Dolo himself is set to release his debut album Man on The Moon: End of Day in November, but if you know him just as that day and night guy, you got some catching up to do. With two dope mixtapes (A kid named CuDi, and Dat kid from Cleveland) CuDi shows a variety of styles that show off the kind of artist he really is. From rapping to singing the man has talent and the world will soon take notice of the man on the moon come November, but don’t be the last one on the spaceship when it takes off.

Pac Div

Pac Div(Pacific Division): Coming straight out of L.A. this hip-hop trio is bringing that Cali sound back in full force to the scene. With as much bass as Dre used to bring, Like, Be Young, and Mibbs, are a forced to be reckoned with as part of the new hip-hop class. Songs like The Mayor show off the the lyrical ability of the group while songs like Taste and Fareal Fareal show that there more than just dope raps. With a new mixtape, Church League All Stars coming soon, this is definitely something you can blast in the car if you want to wake up the neighborhood.

U-N-I

U-N-I: Also hailing from the left coast is the duo U-N-I, consisting of Thursday and Y-O. Think of the Pharcyde but a vast collection of Nikes and Jordans. While most of their Cali compatriots tend to bring more of the bass, U-N-I bring a little more of the smoothness that L.A. is also known for. Songs like Beautiful Day and My life they show you can come out of California without being a gangster, now that’s gangster.

Blu

Blu: Why not finish off the California trinity with perhaps the most promising newcomer in Blu. Drawing comparisons to Common, Blu is slowly coming up in the rap world. Along with his partner in beats Exile, his smooth flow and sharp, witty lyrics, and a laid back style that makes it all look easy. Check out his debut LP with Exile entitled Below the Heavens, if you want a taste of what the future of L.A. looks like.

The Cool Kids

The Cool Kids: You hear that? That’s the sound of the bass heavy crew coming straight out of the Chi. The Midwest duo of Mickey Rocks and Chuck English, might seem more like their coming straight out of the 80’s, with beats by Chuck that will take you back to the days of high top fades and bright colors. Not only does the music sound 80’s that’s how they dress as well, before gold ropes and and high topes where back in style, The Cool Kids where doing it when it wasn’t cool. Check out either the mixtapes’, That’s Stupid and Gone Fishing, or their debut LP The Bake Sale if you want some of that new flavor in your ear (Word to Craig Mack) and keep your eyes peeled for their debut album When Fish Ride Bicycles’ coming later this year.

B.o.B

B.o.B aka Bobby Ray: Last but definitely not least is the ultra talented Mr. Bobby Ray. Some of you might remember Haters Everywhere featuring Rich Boy last year, but this is a new B.o.B hence the name change. If you want a taste of the new sound check out his single I’ll be in the Sky, where he raps, sings, and plays some instruments too. His new mixtape B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray will give you a look at the two very different sides he can bring to the table. Look out for his debut, The Adventures of B.o.B, in stores this November.

This list hopefully will give you a look at what to look for and play this summer if your tired of the same old thing. Don’t be afraid to take a chance on something new, who knows you just might like it!

Flashin Lights?

By Reggie Larkin
Rapper, Kanye West raps about Flashing Lights , but it is painfully ironic that city lights are inhibiting people from seeing the milky way at night. Light pollution is making it difficult for one fifth of the world’s population is unable to enjoy the night sky. “'The arc of the Milky Way seen from a truly dark location is part of our planet's natural heritage, “says Connie walker, astronomer from the US National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Tucson, Arizona. Two thirds of the United States and the European Union cannot see the Milky Way. The remainifcations of Light population go further than mans inability to see the stars. There can be affects on wildlife and energy consumption. For more information check out the original article at http://www.cosmosmagazine.com/news/2797/one-fifth-us-have-lost-sight-milky-way

Check It Out: Video Review of LeToya Luckett- She Ain't Got

By: Alex Langston
,

Going with a 60's theme in her first video off her sophomore album Lady Love, LeToya's second single "She Ain't Got" is more of a 2009 club scene inspired video. It's definitely more amped up than previous singles she's released and bound to do well at parties and in clubs, and fortunately the video also gives off that vibe.
The Houston based singer hasn't really had as much success with singles or videos the way she did in 2006 with the single "Torn" off her self titled album, LeToya but "She Ain't Got" is sure to change all of that. So far the video has gotten mixed reviews, mostly because its much different from what she's known for. For starters she's dancing, and not those little two-step moves some singers are famous for (you know the shimming, and side to side action)but she's getting down with actual choreography. She didn't look stiff like many reviewers have said but she did look like she was a bit out of her comfort zone.
Her style is nonetheless chic in this video. The Chinese bang, the bun, the skin tight multi-colored leggings, and the metallic gold stiletto's-- which are to die for-- shows that she has good taste in style. Her lyrical style on this track is something to rave about as well. One line in particular that stands out is "I done let you out to play but you ain't playin' fair, you done let this lil' stray bring fleas 'round here", followed by, "swing batter, batter, batter...right at her batter, batter" which sounds like ol' Toya is fed up and wants to take more than just a "swing" at homegirl.
We're all hoping that this time around LeToya gets more recognition for her singing abilities and creative style, because in a time when people are kind of tired of Rihanna's edginess and Beyonce's huge "Ego" it's time to see another starlet shine, after all, she has stepped her game up.

Check It Out: Video Review of Drake- Best I Ever Had

By: Alex Langston

What can we say about Drake aka Aubrey Graham? Well for starters he's a great actor, he played Jimmy Brooks on the teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation for close to eight years, he has undeniable sex appeal (and the cutest smile ever!), and now he's one of the most talked about unsigned rappers in the industry.
His latest single "Best I Ever Had" is all over the radio, in clubs, and on people's iPod's. And finally there's a video! The video was directed by Kanye West, whom we all know has impeccable style and not to mention his video's are always awesome and abstract, so it's only right to assume that his directoral skills are just as great...right?
The video looks a little low-budget and is lukewarm compared to the hot song. Nowadays most music videos do not follow the same concept or context as the lyrics to the song but this video is way out of the ballpark. It has a pep-rally feel with Drake as the Coach and an All-Star team of busty and vivacoius women as his basketball team. That figures. The women in the video are pretty but there are many shots of their breasts bouncing up and down in slow-motion with plenty of close ups. Enough! We know the women are hot and that they have breasts, big ones at that but really, as if the video wasn't already weak, throw in some DD's, cameos from singer Trey Songz, rapper Fabolous, unknown Young Money rap artists and you've got yourself a video that's going, well, no where.
Honestly, Kanye should definently keep his day job and get from behind the camera and step in front of it. For Drake, his rap career is still very promising even though this video wasn't. You what know they say, third times a charm, so better luck next time Drake.
